石井厚生（b. 1940）は、多摩美術大学で日本抽象彫刻のパイオニアである建畠覚造（1919-2006）の薫陶を受け、大学卒業後から行動美術展などを中心に国内外で発表。パブリックアートの仕事も数多く手掛け、日本を代表する彫刻家に贈られる中原悌二郎賞優秀賞（1992）、本郷新賞（2005）受賞するなど活躍しました。さらに2009年には三重県立美術館 柳原義達記念館での個展を開催し現在も精力的に制作を続けています。

初期の金属作品や1980年代の石彫を経て、2000年代からは赤レンガを素材とした作品を発表。美術批評家ハーバート・リードの著書『近代彫刻史』を裁断して混入したモルタルで赤レンガを接着し、円環、円盤、壺などを形成するなど常に彫刻の根源を追い求めてきた石井の強い意志が感じ取れます。

今回はギャルリー東京ユマニテにて初めての個展となり、以前より親しんできたトラバーチン（石灰華）や赤レンガを組み合わせた自由でユーモアあふれる作品が発表されます。常に素材と向き合い、真摯に彫刻を表現してきた石井の新作を是非ご高覧下さい。

Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to announce ISHII Atsuo's solo exhibition for the first time in our galley. Ishii prefers to use travertine and bricks and makes free and humorous sculptures. He made metal sculptures early in his career, stone sculptures in the 1980s, and then started to use bricks in the 2000s. He cuts a book A Concise History of Modern Sculpture written by an art critic Herbert Read into pieces and mixed with mortar to glue bricks. Ring, disk or vessel shape sculptures are made out of those bricks. Ishii shows his strong will to trace the origin of sculpture in his works.

Ishii (b. 1940) studied under TATEHATA Kakuzo (1919-2006), a pioneer of Japanese abstract sculpture, at Tama Art University in Tokyo in the 1960s. He received Teijiro Nakahra Excellent Award in 1992, an award given to outstanding Japanese sculptors, and Shin Hongo Award in 2005, an award given to excellent public art. In 2009, he had a solo exhibition in Yoshitatsu Yanagihara Memorial Galleries of Mie Prefectural Art Museum, Japan.
