1960年代後半のアメリカ・ニューヨーク。マンハッタン、アッパーウェストサイドにあったシュルレアリストのウィリアム・コプリー（Wiiliam Copley）のロフトには多くの芸術家たちが集い、自由な共同作業の実験を始めていました。今から50年程前の1968年、2ヶ月毎に頒布された有名無名73人のアーティスト（リキテンシュタイン、デュシャン、マン・レイ、ジョン・ケージ、河原温、オノ・ヨーコ、クリスト、オルデンバーグ、ハミルトン、ナウマンなど）によるマルチプル作品「SMSポートフォリオ」（6点セット）。2,000セット制作販売されましたが、当時はほとんど売れることはなかったようです。

その後、日本では80年代に西武百貨店（東京・池袋）で展覧会が開催されました。現在では、ニューヨーク近代美術館など内外の美術館にコレクションされ、1960年代以降のアメリカアートシーンを語る上で貴重な作品となっています。

Galerie Tokyo Humanité is pleased to announce an exhibition of S.M.S. Portfolio 1968. A complete set of the S.M.S portfolio of six volumes will be showcased in our gallery for the first time.

In the late 1960s in New York, a loft on Manhattan's Upper West Side rented by the Surrealist William Copley was a collaborative work space of various artists frequented there. Released bimonthly in 1968, the S.M.S. portfolio (six volumes) contains a series of multiples contributed by 73 artists both prominent and unknown, such as Roy Lichtenstein, Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, John Cage, On Kawara, Yoko Ono, Christo, Claes Oldenberg, Richard Hamilton, and Bruce Nauman. 2,000 sets were published, but they did not sell well at the time.

In Japan, Seibu Department Store in Tokyo held an exhibition of S.M.S. in the 1980s. Today, the portfolio is collected in museums collections worldwide including MoMA and serves as a time capsule of the 1960s American art scene.
